Position description
The Department of Music, University of California, Santa Barbara
seeks applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in
Music Composition (tenure-track), with an anticipated start date of
July 1, 2025. We seek a composer who has achieved national or
international recognition, will be an effective educator, and will
collaborate in our undergraduate and graduate composition programs.
The ability to interact productively with faculty and students in
ethnomusicology, music theory, musicology, and performance is
highly desirable. The Department is especially interested in
candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of
the academic community through research, teaching, and service as
appropriate to the position. Of particular interest are candidates
with interdisciplinary interests in the arts, humanities, sciences,
or engineering, who will thrive in a department with strengths in
traditional composition, electroacoustic and computer music. The
department is especially interested in candidates with significant
experience in audio production, music technology, digital arts,
and/or multimedia. Experience in commercial, popular and film music
is also of interest. Duties will include teaching undergraduate and
graduate composition, theory and audio technology or production
courses, as well as classes in other related areas, assisting in
the coordination of the undergraduate program in composition,
maintaining and upgrading the electronic and visual music studios,
and collaborating in the organization of the Corwin concert
series.
The Department offers the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in
musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, and composition, and the B.M.,
M.M., and D.M.A. degrees in performance. As a faculty known for its
interdisciplinary culture, we encourage applicants whose
scholarship and teaching can engage students across sub-disciplines
in music, as well as programs across campus, including the Media
Arts and Technology Program, and the College of Creative
Studies.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
* Ph.D., DMA in music composition or an international
equivalent.
Preferred qualifications
* A significant record of publications (written and recorded),
performances, projects and awards in national and international
venues/competitions
* Demonstrated experience in the field of interdisciplinary
creative projects
* At least two years of experience in teaching or mentoring is
desired. This can be regular university teaching and mentoring at
the graduate and undergraduate level, or studio teaching or
industry mentoring
