Under the direction of the Nutrition Education Program Supervisor, the CalFresh Healthy Living Nutrition Education Program (CFHL) Community Education Specialist 3 is responsible for the coordination of the CFHL Nutrition Education Program focusing on delivery of nutrition education to low-resourced youth, adults, and families in qualifying schools and communities.

This includes supervising, training, and guiding nutrition education extenders, developing and implementing yearly work plans, evaluating work plan goals and objectives, and writing reports. This position will coordinate efforts and serve as a liaison with schools and agencies providing related services in Kings County. As part of program delivery, this person will build and maintain coalitions, partnerships, and tailor special nutrition education projects, assist with grant proposals as needed, and maintain subject matter competence. This person will collaborate with partners to implement Policy, System, and Environmental (PSE) strategies that support obesity prevention primarily in the school setting.

The overall goal is to promote healthy lifestyles for low-resourced children, youth, adults and families. This is accomplished by direct teaching and extender training on evidence-based nutrition, food resource management, and physical activity literacy.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

The home department for this position is UCCE Kings County. While this position normally is based in Hanford, CA, this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements for applicants living in the State of California at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University.

Pay Scale: $49,200.00/year to $66,200.00/year

Key Responsibilities:

40%

Perform a full range of program implementation duties for the CalFresh Healthy Living Nutrition Education Program within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) guidelines. Provide ongoing support to extenders and CE Specialists to assist with the delivery of curricula lessons, maintain contact with teachers to ensure collection of program enrollment, activity tracking, and evaluation administration. Prepare lesson plans, culturally centered food demonstrations and tastings to SNAP-Ed eligible youth and adults. Increase opportunity and access to food and physical activity opportunities as informed by approved SNAP-Ed and county-specific Integrated Work Plans (IWP). Perform clerical tasks as necessary to prepare and deliver workshops, training and technical assistance. Plans and develops new programs and curriculum and adjusts existing courses and interventions in a continuing education environment. Train extenders, educators, interns and volunteers to deliver nutrition education lessons and support PSE strategies that promote obesity prevention in qualifying school and community settings.

Participates in developing strategic IWPs and target audiences. Directly coordinates, mentors, and trains other CES 1/2 positions as appropriate. Provides training and oversight on program procedures, curricula teaching methodologies and oversees teaching in the field. Provides significant input to staff performance and development, team building and communication, problem and conflict resolution, review and approval of work for accuracy and productivity. Assists with hiring and training employees and ensures work performance standards are in alignment with professional development goals and benchmarks. Ensures quality control and compliance with established standards and procedures for assigned programs. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress towards IWP goals. Provides summaries of evaluation results for program improvement. Creates budgets and monitors accounting for programmatic development and financial reporting. Represents the CFHL UCCE programs throughout Kings and Tulare Counties in a professional manner.

Develop recruitment, re-enrollment, and implementation strategies for program participation and delivery. In collaboration with other Local Implementing Agencies and community partners, develop county workplans that meet SNAP-Ed guidelines for target audiences. Increase program visibility through the use of social media platforms, write program success stories, and nurture positive and productive partnerships and collective impact.

Maintain team collaboration through meetings and consistent written and verbal communication including but not limited to weekly schedules, program objectives, and team projects. Increase cross program collaboration, develop liaisons with and between other organizations to coordinate and maximize outreach efforts. Maintain appropriate record tracking. Regularly attend SNAP-Ed and CFHL meetings and trainings to increase program implementation and outcomes.

Collect and compile yearly enrollment, monthly documentation and evaluation data from teacher extenders, youth and adult participants to measure program delivery and effectiveness. Work with the CES Supervisor and the Community Health and Nutrition Advisor to utilize evaluation data for program improvement and outcomes.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Continuing education in related field required.
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), Outlook, Google Drive, and social media, and other web-based programs.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Ability to prioritize work to accomplish multiple tasks and work with multiple interruptions.
  • Experience working with socio-economically, racially, and/or ethnically diverse populations.Preferred Skills:
    • Experience supervising and/or training others.
    • Basic knowledge of budgets and accounting.
    • Experience with food preparation or recipe demonstrations.
    • Bilingual communication/translation abilities in English and Spanish. Special Conditions of Employment:
      • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
